COMDEX Scandinavia 2004

Document Actions
major IT tradefair in Gothenburg 2004/01/20-22. FFII aroused favorable attention by a small demo at the entrance.

Successful Demo at Comdex Entrance

Erik Josefsson, Tor Klingberg and Laura Creighton held a demonstration outside Comdex Scandinavia in Göteborg, Sweden on 21 and 22 January. It was done with a police permit and under harsh climatic conditions. The temperature was between -7 and -10 degrees C both days and there was some wind chill as well.

They wore plackards of the webshop front and back (sandwich man style), handed out flyers and talked to people. Despite the severe weather, lots of people took the time to stop and listen to what they said. I'd say that the demonstration was a big success. The 3 participants are heroes for putting up with the cold.

A few pictures have been published. They can be freely copied and used.

Doing the same on a larger scale at CeBit could generate a lot of support. The Swedish team will gladly help with do's and don'ts. We also have some plackards that could come in handy.

Lessons learnt at the Comdex Demo

  • Keep the webshop on the front of the sandwichman. Make a really simple message on the back, that people can grasp very quickly. Otherwise a lot of people think you are trying to sell something.
  • Print lots of flyers. Put a brief message on one side and the webshop on the other. Don't forget the web address of the FFII and put in a short sentence about what people can do to protest.
  • Hand out stickers.
  • Approach people. Ask them if they have a website that features anything on the list.
  • Start before the tradeshow starts. That is when the people in the booths arrive. They have just as big a stake as anyone else.
