letter to MEP

Document Actions
National patent policy makers are once again advancing the interests of the patent community against those of software delveloppers, business people and users, through secret dealings in the EU Council. By adapting this template letter, you can invite your MEP to (1) ask the Council to hand out the document on the software patent directive which they are currently withholding (2) attend the FFII software patent conference on 2004-04-14 (3) agree to be listed as signatory of Call for Action II.

How to use the template

  • Find via

    voting result analysis

which of your region's MEPs voted in favor of innovation.

  • Find the mail addresses or fax/phone numbers of the MEPs via

    http://www.europarl.xx

where xx is the shorthand for your country. Or look at this wiki.ael.be page for a web site with your MEP's contact information. If you do not succede, write to europarl-xx@ffii.org and ask for help. Also feel free to share any information about received responses with this helpdesk.

  • Adapt and/or translate the template and send it to your representative. Call your representative by phone if you do not receive a response.
  • Submit any translations to phm at ffii org or blasum at ffii org for inclusion in this site or register on the site and obtain writing rights from the above persons.

Dear MEP

The Irish Council presidency is once more secretly advancing the interests of patent professionals against those of software professionals and users:

   Document Number: 7230/04
Title: Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the
Council on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions -
   Consolidated/annotated text Content: (!) N/A Interinstitutional File:
   2002/0047(COD) Subject Matter: PI 30
CODEC 347 Document Category: WORKING DOCUMENT Originator: Presidency
Addressee: Working Party on Intellectual Property (Patents) Document
Date: 17-03-2004 Date of Meeting: Archive Date: 17-03-2004 Document
   Language: EN

Can you get access to this document?

The predecessor of this document is analysed at:

          http://swpat.ffii.org/papers/europarl0309/cons0401/

After years of sad experience, we have no trust whatsoever in the EU Council's "Working Party on Intellectual Property (Patents)", i.e. the group of people that is, in another organisational setting, running the European Patent Office (EPO).

Their strategy seems to be to either kill the directive project or hand the EPO a blanko cheque with help of a new parliament.

The FFII is planning to launch a campaign in various European countries, to be kicked off by an event in the European Parliament in Brussels, room ASP AG2, on wednesday April 14th, with scientists, software entrepreneurs and journalists:

          http://plone.ffii.org/events/2004/bxl04/

We would be very happy if you could participate in this event.

We would also be very happy if you could agree to be listed as a signator of:

          Call for Action
          http://swpat.ffii.org/papers/europarl0309/demands/

In that case you may want to write to the FFII helpdesk cpedu-help@ffii.org or just to me.

Maybe you could also suggest some other people in your group or in your country's government to whom we should directly write.

Let me again express my deep gratitude for your and your group's courage in defending the public interest and wish you strength and success with your ongoing work!

Yours sincerely
