"Patent Riots" 2004!
A demonstration of the economic -- and democratic -- majority in support of the European Parliament's position on software patents and for parliamentary democracy in the EU, against national governments who are using the Commission and the Council as a means of circumventing democratic control. Last year a successful predecessor demo was termed "the 2003 Patent Riots" by US computer columnist John Dvorak. Although quite peaceful and imaginative, the event expressed the fact that professionals from all over Europe cared to come to Brussels, which says a lot about the state of the patent system and of EU democracy.
